Here are some popular ways to take notes. Each one has good things and bad things. Find the one you like!

1. The Cornell Way

This way splits your page into sections. You take notes in the big section. Then, you write keywords on the side. At the bottom, you write a summary. It's great for remembering stuff later.

How to Cornell:

  1. Split your page: Notes, Cues, Summary.
  2. Take notes during class.
  3. After class, write keywords in the Cues section.
  4. Write a summary at the bottom.

2. The Outline Way

This way uses numbers and letters to show how things connect. It's good for classes that are organized. You can see how everything fits together. I think this is good for studying

How to Outline:

  1. Use I, II, III for main ideas.
  2. Use A, B, C for ideas that go with the main ideas.
  3. Use 1, 2, 3 for details about the sub-ideas.
  4. You can keep going with a, b, c if you need to.

3. The Map Way

This way uses pictures and diagrams. It's good if you like to see things visually. Draw a circle with the main idea in the middle. Then, draw lines out to other ideas.

How to Map:

  1. Write the main idea in the middle.
  2. Draw lines out from the middle.
  3. Write keywords on each line.
  4. Draw more lines to connect ideas.

4. The Chart Way

This way uses tables to compare things. It's good for classes where you compare different ideas. Make columns for each thing you're comparing.

How to Chart:

  1. Decide what things you want to compare.
  2. Make a table with columns for each thing.
  3. Fill in the table with information.

5. The Sentence Way

This way is simple. Write each new idea on a new line. It's good if the teacher jumps around a lot. Just listen and write!

How to Sentence:

  1. Listen to the teacher.
  2. Write each new idea on a new line.
  3. Number each line.

Take Great Notes During Class

You've picked your way to take notes. Now, let's talk about how to take them well:

1. Listen!

Pay attention to the teacher. What are the main ideas? What's important? Listen for clues like when the teacher says, "This is important!"

2. Short Cuts!

Use short cuts to write faster. "Etc." means "and so on." Make up your own short cuts, too! I like w/ for with, and b/c for because!

3. Don't Write Everything!

Don't try to write down every single word. Write the important stuff in your own words. This helps you understand it better.

4. Leave Space!

Leave space between your notes. You can add more later. Maybe you'll remember something else. That space will help you.

5. Ask Questions!

Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you don't understand something, ask! Write down your questions so you don't forget.

After Class: Make Your Notes Even Better

You took notes in class. Great! But you're not done yet. Review your notes to make them super useful.

1. Do It Now!

Look at your notes as soon as you can. Do it within 24 hours. The sooner, the better. It will be easier to remember what the teacher said.

2. Fill in the Blanks

Did you miss something? Look it up in the book. Ask a friend. Fill in any gaps in your notes.

3. Get Organized

Make your notes neat and tidy. Add headings and bullet points. Make them easy to read. Good for studying

Use your notes to test yourself. Can you answer the questions in the book? Can you explain the ideas to someone else? I think this will improve learning
