Taking good notes? It's a super important skill. It can really help you in school. Whether you're in high school or college, knowing how to take notes is key. It helps you understand stuff, remember things, and do better in your classes. This guide will show you how to take notes like a pro!
Why is note-taking even important? Well, it's more than just writing things down. It helps your brain work better. It helps you understand what you're learning. And... it helps you remember it! Here's why good notes matter:
Don't just show up and start writing. Get ready first! Here's how:
Look at the class plan. Read the homework before class. That way, you know what the teacher will talk about. You'll know the important stuff.
You'll need a notebook, pens, and highlighters. Or, use a computer or tablet. Make sure everything is ready before class starts. Don't get distracted looking for a pen!
There are different ways to take notes. We'll talk about them soon. Find the one that works best for you. Stick with it.
Here are some popular ways to take notes. Each one has good things and bad things. Find the one you like!
This way splits your page into sections. You take notes in the big section. Then, you write keywords on the side. At the bottom, you write a summary. It's great for remembering stuff later.
How to Cornell:
This way uses numbers and letters to show how things connect. It's good for classes that are organized. You can see how everything fits together. I think this is good for studying
How to Outline:
This way uses pictures and diagrams. It's good if you like to see things visually. Draw a circle with the main idea in the middle. Then, draw lines out to other ideas.
How to Map:
This way uses tables to compare things. It's good for classes where you compare different ideas. Make columns for each thing you're comparing.
How to Chart:
This way is simple. Write each new idea on a new line. It's good if the teacher jumps around a lot. Just listen and write!
How to Sentence:
You've picked your way to take notes. Now, let's talk about how to take them well:
Pay attention to the teacher. What are the main ideas? What's important? Listen for clues like when the teacher says, "This is important!"
Use short cuts to write faster. "Etc." means "and so on." Make up your own short cuts, too! I like w/ for with, and b/c for because!
Don't try to write down every single word. Write the important stuff in your own words. This helps you understand it better.
Leave space between your notes. You can add more later. Maybe you'll remember something else. That space will help you.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you don't understand something, ask! Write down your questions so you don't forget.
You took notes in class. Great! But you're not done yet. Review your notes to make them super useful.
Look at your notes as soon as you can. Do it within 24 hours. The sooner, the better. It will be easier to remember what the teacher said.
Did you miss something? Look it up in the book. Ask a friend. Fill in any gaps in your notes.
Make your notes neat and tidy. Add headings and bullet points. Make them easy to read. Good for studying
Write a short summary of each section. What were the main ideas? This helps you remember the big picture. It helps me a lot in education
Use your notes to test yourself. Can you answer the questions in the book? Can you explain the ideas to someone else? I think this will improve learning
