How to Make Amazing Cold Brew Coffee
Cold brew is super popular, and for good reason! It's smooth, less acidic, and tastes totally different from regular coffee. Want to make incredible cold brew at home? This guide will show you how.
What's the Deal with Cold Brew?
Cold brew is coffee concentrate. You steep coarsely ground beans in cold or room-temp water for a long time—like 12-24 hours. This slow brewing makes it less acidic than hot coffee. It's smoother, less bitter, and often sweeter. Plus, it's easier on my stomach!
Choosing the Right Beans
The beans totally change the taste. I like bold, flavorful beans from places like Sumatra, Brazil, or Indonesia. But, hey, experiment! That's half the fun.
Tip: Don't use light roasts. They make weak cold brew.
What You'll Need
- Coarse Grinder: You need this to get the right grind size. Too fine, and it's bitter. Too coarse, and it's weak.
- Scale: Seriously, use a scale! It helps you make the same great cold brew every time.
- Brewing Jar: A big mason jar, French press, or special cold brew maker all work. Just make sure it has a lid!
- Fine Mesh Sieve or Filter: This is crucial to separate the grounds from the brew. Cheesecloth works, too.
- Storage Container: Keep your cold brew in the fridge, in an airtight container. It'll last about two weeks.
Different Ways to Brew
1. The Easy Mason Jar Method
- Grind: Grind your beans coarsely – think coarse sea salt.
- Ratio: Use a 1:8 coffee-to-water ratio (like 100 grams of coffee to 800 grams of water). Adjust to your taste!
- Steep: Put the grounds in your jar. Add cold, filtered water. Stir gently. Cover tightly.
- Time: Steep in the fridge for 12-24 hours. Longer is stronger.
- Strain: Strain through a sieve or filter. Toss the grounds.
- Enjoy! Add water, milk, or whatever you like.
2. The French Press Method
This way has a little more sediment.
- Follow steps 1-3 of the mason jar method.
- Steep for 12-24 hours in the fridge.
- Slowly press the plunger. Pour carefully to avoid sediment.
- Enjoy!
3. Using a Cold Brew Maker
These are super easy. Just follow the instructions!
Cold Brew Recipes & Ideas
Basic Cold Brew with Milk: Add milk (any kind!)
Sweet Cold Brew: Add maple syrup, honey, or sugar.
Fancy Nitro Cold Brew: Use a nitro system for a creamy, cascading texture. (This is on my to-do list!)

Tips for the Best Cold Brew
- Fresh Beans: Use beans roasted within the last 2-3 weeks.
- Adjust the Ratio: Experiment to find your perfect strength.
- Filter Well: Get rid of all the grounds for a smooth brew.
- Store it Right: An airtight container in the fridge keeps it fresh.
- Don't Over-Steep: Or it'll get bitter.
- Get Creative: Add vanilla, cinnamon, or other spices while steeping.
Troubleshooting
Too Weak? Use more coffee, or steep longer.
Too Bitter? Use a coarser grind, less coffee, or steep for less time.
Too Much Sediment? Use a finer mesh filter.
Making great cold brew takes practice. Don't be afraid to experiment! Happy brewing!
