How to Make a Paper Plate Bird Feeder

Want to see more birds in your yard? It's easier than you think! Making a bird feeder is a fun project, especially if you get the kids involved. Let me show you how to make a super simple bird feeder using just a paper plate.

Why Use a Paper Plate?

Good question! Here's why I think paper plate bird feeders are awesome:

  • Easy Peasy: Seriously, they're so simple to make.
  • Cheap: Paper plates are super affordable. Perfect for a budget project!
  • Learning Time: Teach the kiddos about birds and nature. It's a win-win.
  • Good for the Earth: Biodegradable paper plates? Yes, please!
  • Fun! Making things is just plain enjoyable, isn't it?

What You'll Need

Okay, gather these things before we start:

  • Two paper plates (at least)
  • Hole punch
  • String, yarn, or twine
  • Scissors
  • Non-toxic glue or tape
  • Birdseed (duh!)
  • Optional: Markers, paint, crayons to make it look cool

Let's Make a Bird Feeder!

Ready? Here's the step-by-step:

Step 1: Make it Pretty (If You Want)

This part is all you. Decorate those plates! Use paint, markers, whatever you have. Maybe draw some leaves or berries? Just make sure it's non-toxic, for the birds' sake.

Let it dry. Very important.

Step 2: Get the Plates Ready

Grab one plate. Make a small cut from the edge towards the center. Now, fold that bit up – it's going to be the side of your feeder! Do the same on the opposite side. Two flaps, got it?

The other plate? That's the base.

Step 3: Put it Together

Put glue or tape on the edges of those flaps. Stick 'em to the base plate. You're making a little bowl shape. Press firmly! Gotta make sure it's secure so the birdseed doesn't fall out.

Wait for it to dry. Patience, young grasshopper!

Step 4: Make Some Holes

Use that hole punch. Make two holes on opposite sides, near the top. This is where you'll hang it.

Make sure the holes are big enough for your string.

Step 5: Add a Hanger

Cut a piece of string, yarn, whatever you're using. Make it long enough to hang from a tree. Thread it through the holes and tie it securely.

Double-check that knot! You don't want it falling down.

Step 6: Fill 'Er Up!

Time for birdseed! Sunflower seeds are always a good choice. Millet works too. Pick something the birds in your area will love.

Skip the bread and crackers. Not good for the birdies!

Step 7: Hang It Up!

Find a good spot in your yard. A tree branch is perfect. Make sure it's safe from cats and other predators.

Hang it up and... wait! The birds will come. I promise!

More Bird-Attracting Tips

Want even more birds?

  • Water is Key: Birds need to drink and bathe! A bird bath is awesome.
  • Plant Local: Native plants give birds food and shelter.
  • Variety is the Spice of Life: Different birds like different seeds. Offer a mix!
  • Give Them Shelter: Trees and bushes help birds hide from bad weather and predators.
  • Keep it Clean: A tidy yard is a happy yard (for birds, too!).
  • Skip the Pesticides: Bad for birds!

What Kind of Birdseed?

The right seed brings the right birds. Here's a quick guide:

  • Sunflower Seeds: Everyone loves them. Cardinals, finches, you name it.
  • Millet: Ground-feeding birds like doves love this.
  • Nyjer Seeds (Thistle): Finches go nuts for these. You need a special feeder though.
  • Safflower Seeds: Cardinals and doves, but squirrels usually leave them alone.
  • Peanuts: Woodpeckers and jays love peanuts.
  • Suet: High-fat, great for winter. Woodpeckers and nuthatches will thank you.

Uh Oh, Problems?

Things happen! Here's how to fix some common issues:

  • Feeder Falls Apart: Stronger glue! Thicker plates!
  • Seed Falls Out: Seal those gaps with extra glue or tape.
  • Squirrels Stealing Seed: Hang it where squirrels can't reach. Try a squirrel baffle! Safflower seeds might help too.
  • No Birds: Be patient! Move the feeder. Add water. Make sure the seed is fresh.

Make it Last Longer

Paper plates aren't forever. Here's how to extend the life of your feeder:

  • Heavy-Duty Plates: Use the thickest paper plates you can find.
  • Waterproof It: Non-toxic sealant is your friend!
  • Keep it Dry: Hang it under a tree or the roof.
  • Replace it: It's a paper plate. Replace it every few weeks.

More Ideas?

Want to get fancy?

  • Pine Cone Feeder: Peanut butter + birdseed = awesome.
  • Orange Peel Feeder: Fill an orange peel with seeds.
  • Milk Carton Feeder: Decorate a milk carton and cut some holes.
  • Plastic Bottle Feeder: Get creative with a plastic bottle and some spoons.

That's It!

Making a paper plate bird feeder is a super easy way to bring some backyard birds to your place. It’s a great craft for anyone. Just follow these tips and tricks, and you'll have a yard full of happy birds in no time! Don't forget to give them water and keep things clean. Happy birdwatching!
