Want to get outside? Need some fresh air? Hiking might be just the thing! It's great for your body and mind. But where do you start? Don't worry, I'll show you the basics to get you going.
Why Start Hiking?
Hiking is awesome for so many reasons. Check it out:
- Get in shape! Hiking is great exercise for your heart and legs. It builds strength.
- Chill out. Nature helps you relax. Stress goes down!
- Think clear. Walking can help you clear your head. It's like meditation!
- See cool stuff. The world is beautiful. Hiking lets you see it up close.
- Have fun! Explore new places and make awesome memories.
Planning Your First Hike: Steps to Take
Planning makes your hike fun and safe. Here's how to get ready:
1. Pick the Right Trail
Start easy! Choose a trail that's not too hard. Keep these things in mind:
- How far? Start with short hikes. Maybe 1-3 miles. You can go further later.
- Hills? Pick a trail that's mostly flat at the start. Less work!
- What's it like? Look for trails that are easy to walk on. No crazy rocks.
- How hard is it? Websites like AllTrails can tell you how hard a trail is.
2. Watch the Weather
The weather can change fast, especially in the mountains. So, check the forecast before you go. And bring extra clothes just in case.
3. Tell Someone Where You're Going
Always tell a friend or family member where you're hiking. Tell them which trail and when you'll be back. It's just smart.
4. Pack the Right Stuff
Here's what you need in your backpack:
- How to find your way: A map and compass (and know how to use them!). Or a GPS.
- Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Warm clothes: Even if it's warm out. Extra layers are always a good idea.
- Light: A headlamp or flashlight. With extra batteries!
- First-aid kit: For cuts and scrapes.
- How to make fire: Matches or a lighter. In a waterproof bag!
- Tools: A knife or multi-tool. Duct tape, too. It fixes everything!
- Snacks: Trail mix, energy bars, fruit. You'll get hungry!
- Water: Lots of it! Or a way to clean water if you run out.
- Emergency shelter: A lightweight blanket or bivy sack. Just in case.
This list is based on the "Ten Essentials," a classic list from The Mountaineers.
5. Check Trail Conditions
See if the trail is open. Are there any problems? Call the park ranger or look online before you go.
Gear You Need to Start Hiking
Good gear makes hiking way better. Here's what to get:
1. Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes
Good shoes are key. They should support your ankles and have good grip. Hiking boots are best for rough trails. Trail shoes are lighter for easier hikes. Break them in before your hike so you don't get blisters!
2. Backpack
Get a backpack that fits well. A 20-30 liter pack is good for day hikes.
3. Hiking Poles (Maybe)
Poles help you balance. They also take pressure off your knees. Great for steep hills!
4. Clothes that Dry Fast
Don't wear cotton! It gets wet and stays wet. Look for polyester or merino wool. They dry quickly.
5. Rain Gear
A waterproof jacket and pants are a must. Even if it looks sunny!
6. Headlamp or Flashlight
Bring a light, even if you think you'll be back before dark. You never know!
7. Water Bottles or Hydration Pack
Drink plenty of water! At least 2 liters. A hydration pack makes it easy to drink while you hike.
Keep Safe While Hiking
Staying safe is always the most important thing. Here's how:
- Stay on the Trail: Don't wander off. You can get lost!
- Watch Out for Animals: Learn about the animals in the area. Store food safely.
- Take it Easy: Don't push yourself too hard. Start slow and build up.
- Listen to Your Body: If you're tired, stop and rest. If you're hurt, get help.
- Be Ready for Anything: Know how to use your map and first-aid kit.
- Leave No Trace: Pack out your trash. Stay on the trail. Be nice to nature.
Be Nice on the Trail
Trail etiquette makes hiking better for everyone. Here are some tips:
- Let Uphill Hikers Pass: They have the right-of-way. Step aside.
- Keep Your Dog Leashed: And clean up after it!
- Be Quiet: Don't be loud. Let people enjoy nature.
- Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash, stay on trails, and minimize your impact on the environment.
Find Trails Near You
Want to find a trail? Here are some ideas:
- AllTrails: A website and app with lots of trails and reviews.
- Park Websites: Check the websites for parks near you.
- Hiking Books: Local hiking guidebooks have good info.
- Outdoor Stores: Ask the people who work there. They know the local trails!

Cross Rivers Safely
Rivers can be dangerous. Find a wide, shallow spot. Unbuckle your pack. Use hiking poles. Face upstream. Take small steps.
Go Up and Down Steep Hills
Going up? Lean forward. Take small steps. Use your hands for balance. Going down? Lean back a little. Use your poles. Don't run!
Deal with Animals
