Planning makes your hike fun and safe. Here's how to get ready:

1. Pick the Right Trail

Start easy! Choose a trail that's not too hard. Keep these things in mind:

  • How far? Start with short hikes. Maybe 1-3 miles. You can go further later.
  • Hills? Pick a trail that's mostly flat at the start. Less work!
  • What's it like? Look for trails that are easy to walk on. No crazy rocks.
  • How hard is it? Websites like AllTrails can tell you how hard a trail is.

2. Watch the Weather

The weather can change fast, especially in the mountains. So, check the forecast before you go. And bring extra clothes just in case.

3. Tell Someone Where You're Going

Always tell a friend or family member where you're hiking. Tell them which trail and when you'll be back. It's just smart.

4. Pack the Right Stuff

Here's what you need in your backpack:

  1. How to find your way: A map and compass (and know how to use them!). Or a GPS.
  2. Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  3. Warm clothes: Even if it's warm out. Extra layers are always a good idea.
  4. Light: A headlamp or flashlight. With extra batteries!
  5. First-aid kit: For cuts and scrapes.
  6. How to make fire: Matches or a lighter. In a waterproof bag!
  7. Tools: A knife or multi-tool. Duct tape, too. It fixes everything!
  8. Snacks: Trail mix, energy bars, fruit. You'll get hungry!
  9. Water: Lots of it! Or a way to clean water if you run out.
  10. Emergency shelter: A lightweight blanket or bivy sack. Just in case.

5. Check Trail Conditions

See if the trail is open. Are there any problems? Call the park ranger or look online before you go.

Gear You Need to Start Hiking

Good gear makes hiking way better. Here's what to get:

1. Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes

Good shoes are key. They should support your ankles and have good grip. Hiking boots are best for rough trails. Trail shoes are lighter for easier hikes. Break them in before your hike so you don't get blisters!

2. Backpack

Get a backpack that fits well. A 20-30 liter pack is good for day hikes.

3. Hiking Poles (Maybe)

4. Clothes that Dry Fast

5. Rain Gear
