Finding a wild animal that looks hurt can be tough. A bird with a broken wing? A baby squirrel all alone? A deer stuck in a fence? It's good to know how you can help. This guide gives you simple steps to help. We'll talk about saving animals, keeping them happy, and taking care of nature. You can make a difference! But remember: be safe. Don't get too close to wild animals unless you know what you're doing.
What You Can Do
First, you need to know what you can do. You're mostly there to get the animal help. Unless you're trained to help wild animals, don't try to take care of them yourself. It could hurt them more. Wild animals need special food and places to live. If you don't know what you're doing, they could get sicker or even die. Plus, it's often against the law to keep wild animals without permission.
So, what can you do?
- Look closely: See what's wrong. Is it hurt? Is it alone?
- Keep it safe (if you can): If it's in danger, move it to a safe box or container.
- Call for help: Call a local animal rescuer, animal control, or a vet who knows about wild animals.
- Help a little (if they tell you to): If the rescuers tell you to do something, like give it water, do it carefully.
Does It Really Need Help?
Not every wild animal needs your help. Sometimes they look like they're in trouble, but they're just doing what animals do. Like baby birds. They often leave the nest before they can fly well. Their parents are still taking care of them! So, before you help, ask yourself:
- Is it hurt? Look for blood, broken bones, or trouble moving.
- Is it alone? If it's a baby, watch from far away. Maybe its parents are nearby getting food. Only help if you know the parents aren't coming back.
- Is it in danger? Is it stuck? Is it too hot or cold? Is something trying to hurt it?
- Is it acting weird? Is it confused? Is it moving slowly? Is it acting mean?
If you said "yes" to any of those, it probably needs help. But be careful! Your safety comes first.
Be Safe!
It's important to be safe around wild animals. Even if they look weak, they can still bite, scratch, or make you sick. Always do these things:
- Wear gloves: Thick gloves will protect your hands.
- Don't touch it with your bare hands: Use a towel or box to pick it up.
- Wash your hands: After you touch a wild animal, wash your hands really well with soap and water.
- Keep kids and pets away: They could get hurt or make the animal more scared.
- Know about diseases: Wild animals can have diseases that people can get. Don't touch their spit, poop, or pee.
- Don't try to be a doctor: Unless a rescuer or vet tells you to, don't give it food, water, or medicine.
What to Do, Step-by-Step
- Watch it: From a safe spot, look closely at the animal. See if it's hurt or acting strange.
- Put it in a container (if needed and safe): If it's in danger, gently put it in a box or tub. Use a soft towel or blanket inside. Make sure it can breathe. Don't use a wire cage, it could get hurt.
- Keep it calm: Put the container in a quiet, dark, and warm place. Away from kids, pets, and loud noises. Being scared is bad for wild animals. A heating pad on low can keep it warm, but make sure it can move away from the heat if it gets too hot.
- Call for help! This is the most important thing. Search online for animal rescuers, animal control, or vets who know about wild animals near you. Tell them what's happening and follow their directions. Give them as much information as you can.
- Do what they say: The rescuers will tell you what to do until they can take over. Maybe they'll tell you to give it food or water. Only do it if they say so!
- Write it down: Keep track of everything you do. When you found it, what it looked like, what you did, and who you called. This will help the rescuers.
What If...?
Different situations need different actions. Here are some examples:
Hurt Bird
Carefully pick it up with a towel and put it in a box with a soft blanket. Keep it warm, dark, and quiet. Call a rescuer or vet right away. Don't give it food or water unless they tell you to.
Lonely Baby Squirrel
Watch it from far away to see if its mom comes back. If she doesn't, pick it up with gloves and put it in a box with a soft blanket. Keep it warm with a heating pad underneath. Call a rescuer right away. Don't give it milk! It can make them sick. The rescuer will give it the right food.
Deer Hit by a Car
Don't go near it! Deer can be dangerous when they're hurt. Call animal control or the police right away. Tell them where it is.
Animal Stuck in a Fence
Be careful! If it's not badly hurt and you can safely help it, do it. Wear gloves. It might bite or scratch because it's scared. If it's badly hurt or you can't get it out safely, call animal control or a rescuer.
Finding Help Nearby
It's important to know who to call. Here's how to find rescuers, animal control, and vets near you:
- Search online: Use Google or Bing to search for "animal rescuers near me," "animal control [your city/county]," or "vets who help wild animals [your city/county]."
- State wildlife agencies: Most states have a website that lists licensed animal rescuers.
- Animal shelters: They often know animal rescuers and can give you their numbers.
- Vets: Some vets know how to treat wild animals. Call around to ask.
Helping for the Long Haul
Knowing how to help wildlife means more than just rescuing animals. You can help protect animal welfare and nature in the long run. Here's how:
- Donate: Give money to groups that protect wildlife.
- Volunteer: Help out at a local rescue center, animal shelter, or park.
- Be eco-friendly: Use less stuff, recycle, and save water.
- Teach others: Tell your friends and family about wildlife conservation.
- Support laws: Support laws that protect wildlife and their homes.
You Can Be a Wildlife Hero!
By knowing how to help wildlife, you can help protect animal welfare and nature. Even small things can make a big difference. Follow these steps to help hurt or lonely animals get the care they need. You can help make the world a better place for everyone! Always be safe, respect wildlife, and support the people who work hard to protect these animals. Your actions can save lives and help our world thrive.
