How to Make a Paper Airplane That Flies Back To You

Master the boomerang! Learn how to make a paper airplane that flies back to you. Easy paper airplane instructions & tricks inside! Fly further!

Ever dreamed of a paper airplane that comes right back to you? It’s totally doable! You don't need to be a rocket scientist. Just need some simple folds and a bit of know-how. This guide will show you how to make paper airplanes that actually return. We'll explore different designs and tricks to impress your friends.

Understanding How Return Flight Works

Before we start folding, let's talk about why some paper airplanes fly back. Here are some key things:

  • Lift: Wings push air down, plane goes up. Bigger wings? More lift.
  • Drag: Air slows the plane down. Less drag is better.
  • Gravity: Pulls the plane down.
  • Center of Gravity (CG): Where the plane's weight balances. For a return flight, it needs to be a little bit forward.
  • Control Surfaces: These little flaps change the plane's direction.

What You Need

Your paper matters. Here's a quick guide:

  • Printer Paper: Great for beginners. Easy to fold.
  • Cardstock: Stronger, but harder to fold perfectly.
  • Specialty Paper: Some papers are made just for this!

Besides paper, you'll also want:

  • A flat surface.
  • Ruler (maybe).
  • Scissors (maybe).
  • Paper clips or tape (maybe).

Design 1: The Classic Boomerang

Folding the Boomerang

  1. Start with a rectangle. Fold it in half, then unfold.
  2. Fold the top corners to the middle.
  3. Fold those top edges to the middle again.
  4. Fold the whole thing in half.
  5. Fold the wings down. Make them about 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the body.
  6. Make small upward folds (elevators) at the back of each wing. These are important!

Making it Fly Back

Now, let's tweak it:

  • Elevators: Bend them up more to climb higher. If it stalls, bend them less.
  • Weight: A paper clip on the nose can help.
  • Wing Shape: Curve the wings up a bit for more stable flight.

Design 2: The Delta Wing

Folding the Delta Wing

  1. Start with a square. Fold it diagonally, crease, unfold.
  2. Fold the other corners diagonally, crease, unfold.
  3. Fold the top corner to the center.
  4. Fold the top edges to the middle.
  5. Fold the whole thing in half.
  6. Fold the wings down. They should be bigger than on the boomerang.
  7. Make those elevator folds!

Getting the Delta Wing to Return

Let's adjust this one too:

  • Elevators: Experiment with the angle.
  • Ailerons: Small folds at the wingtips can make it turn. One up, one down!
  • Weight: This design is picky about weight. Try adding tiny weights.

Design 3: The Reverse Thrust Glider

Folding the Reverse Thrust Glider

  1. Start with a rectangle. Fold it in half, then unfold.
  2. Fold the top two corners inward to meet the center crease line.
  3. Fold the top edges of the triangular flaps inward again to meet the center crease line.
  4. Now, fold the top point down so that it goes past the previous folds, about 1-2 inches. Crease. This forms the nose.
  5. Fold the entire airplane in half along the original center crease line. The wings should now be on the outside.
  6. Fold each wing down, creating a perpendicular angle to the fuselage (the body of the airplane). The wing size should be approximately one-third to one-half of the fuselage length. Make sure the wing edges are parallel to the table.
  7. The key to the reverse thrust glider is the "reverse thrust flaps" or spoilers. Cut a small slit, approximately 1 inch long, into the top surface of each wing, near the trailing edge. Then, gently fold these small flaps upwards. These spoilers disrupt the airflow and create drag, causing the plane to slow down and, ideally, curve back.

Paper Airplane Tricks: Mastering the Reverse Thrust

This design is more complex, and the return flight depends heavily on the spoiler adjustments:

  • Spoiler Angle: The angle of the spoilers is crucial. Too much angle, and the plane will stall and drop. Too little, and it won't curve back. Experiment with very small adjustments.
  • Symmetry: Ensure the spoilers on both wings are symmetrical. Uneven spoilers will cause the plane to turn uncontrollably.
  • Weight Distribution: Minor weight adjustments can make a big difference. Try adding a very small piece of tape to the nose to stabilize the flight.

Problems? Here's How to Fix Them

Sometimes things go wrong. Don't worry!

  • Stalls: Needs more speed or less lift. Reduce elevator angle, add nose weight, or throw harder.
  • Loops: Center of gravity is too far back. Add nose weight or reduce elevator angle.
  • Won't turn: Not enough elevator, uneven wings, or bad ailerons. Check your folds!
  • Turns too much: Ailerons or spoilers are too extreme. Adjust them.

Pro Tips

Want even better flights?

  • Good paper helps.
  • Fold carefully!
  • Throw the same way each time.
  • Try different angles.
  • Fly inside (no wind!).
  • Don't give up!
