So, you want to install a toilet yourself? It might seem hard. But with the right stuff and doing things one step at a time, you can do it! This guide will help you. It'll show you how to take out the old toilet and put in the new one without leaks. Even if you've never fixed anything before, this will give you the know-how to get it done. Just remember: be safe! Always turn off the water before you start.
Get Ready: Tools and Stuff
Before you even look at the old toilet, get everything ready. This will save you time later. Here's what you need:
- New Toilet: Pick the right size and look for your bathroom.
- Wax Ring: This stops water from leaking between the toilet and the floor pipe. You need a new one!
- Toilet Bolts and Washers: These hold the toilet to the floor. If your old ones are rusty, get new ones.
- Water Hose: This connects the toilet to the water. A new one is best, so you don't have leaks.
- Plumber's Putty: This seals around the bottom of the toilet.
- Wrench: For tightening nuts and bolts.
- Pliers: For grabbing things that are stuck.
- Screwdrivers: Both kinds, for different screws.
- Putty Knife: For scraping off old wax and stuff.
- Bucket: To catch water.
- Sponge and Rags: For cleaning up messes.
- Gloves: To keep your hands clean.
- Safety Glasses: To protect your eyes.
- Hacksaw (maybe): You might need this to cut old bolts.
- Toilet Auger (maybe): To unclog the drain.
- Level: To make sure the toilet is straight.
- Caulk Gun and Caulk (maybe): For sealing the bottom (check your local rules).
Step 1: Take Out the Old One
First, turn off the water! The shut-off is usually behind the toilet. No shut-off? Turn off the water to the whole house.
- Turn off the water: Turn the valve behind the toilet until it's closed.
- Flush: Hold the handle until the tank is empty. Use a sponge to get the last bit of water out.
- Take off the water hose: Use a wrench to loosen the nut. Have a bucket ready to catch water.
- Remove bolt covers: These are plastic caps over the bolts. Pry them off with a screwdriver.
- Loosen the bolts: Use a wrench. If they're rusty, cut them with a hacksaw.
- Rock the toilet: Gently rock it back and forth to break the wax seal.
- Lift it off: Lift the toilet straight up. It might be heavy, so get help! The wax ring will be messy.
- Plug the drain: Stuff a rag in the hole to stop bad smells.
Step 2: Get the Floor Ready
The flange is the metal ring that holds the toilet. Make sure it's in good shape!
- Remove the old wax: Use a putty knife to scrape off all the old wax.
- Check the flange: Look for cracks. If it's broken, you might need a plumber.
- Clean it: Use a sponge and cleaner to clean the flange.
- Put in new bolts: Put the new bolts in the slots on the flange. Make sure they're tight.
Step 3: Put in the New Toilet
This is the big part! Follow these steps to do it right.
- Put on the wax ring: Put the new wax ring on the bottom of the toilet, around the hole. Some have a plastic horn; point it down.
- Line it up: Lift the toilet and put it over the flange. Line up the bolt holes.
- Lower it: Gently lower the toilet onto the flange. Press it down evenly to make a good seal.
- Put on washers and nuts: Put the washers on the bolts, then screw on the nuts.
- Tighten the nuts: Tighten them a little at a time, back and forth. Don't tighten too much, or you could break the toilet! Rock the toilet to check. It shouldn't rock more than 1/4 inch.
- Cut the bolts: If the bolts are too long, cut off the extra with a hacksaw.
- Put on the caps: Snap the bolt caps over the bolts.
- Connect the water: Connect the new water hose to the toilet and the shut-off valve. Tighten with a wrench.
Step 4: Test and Finish
Almost done! Time to test it out.
- Turn on the water: Slowly turn the shut-off valve to turn on the water.
- Check for leaks: Look for water leaking from anywhere. If you see a leak, tighten the connections.
- Flush: Flush the toilet a few times to make sure it works.
- Add putty: Put plumber's putty around the base of the toilet to seal any gaps.
- Caulk (maybe): You might want to caulk around the base. Check your local rules.
- Clean up: Clean up any messes and throw away the old toilet.
What If Something Goes Wrong?
Things don't always go as planned. Here are some problems and how to fix them:
- Toilet rocks: It's not sitting right on the wax ring. Try tightening the bolts. If that doesn't work, you might need a thicker wax ring.
- Leaks at the base: Bad wax ring or loose bolts. Tighten the bolts or replace the wax ring.
- Leaks at the water hose: Tighten the connections. Maybe you need a new hose.
- Toilet won't flush: Something is clogging the drain. Use a toilet auger.
When to Call a Plumber
You can do this yourself, but sometimes you need a pro. Call a plumber if:
- The flange is broken: This can be hard to fix.
- There are leaks in the drainpipe: That's plumbing work.
- You've never done plumbing before: It's okay to ask for help!
- You don't know the rules: Plumbers know the local codes.
Keep Your Toilet Working Well
Now that your new toilet is in, here's how to keep it running:
- Only flush toilet paper and waste: Don't flush anything else, or it will clog.
- Clean it often: This will stop stains.
- Check for leaks: Catching leaks early saves you trouble.
- Use toilet bowl cleaner: This keeps the bowl clean.
You Did It!
Putting in a toilet yourself can save you money. Follow these steps, be safe, and take your time. If you have trouble, don't be afraid to call a plumber. Good job!
