  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Learn how to push on the chest and give breaths. For adults, kids, and babies. Also, learn how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
  • Basic First Aid: This means taking care of cuts, burns, broken bones, sprains, and more.
  • Helping Someone Choking: Learn how to get something out of someone's throat. For adults, kids, and babies.
  • Medical Problems: Learn to spot and help with heart attacks, strokes, seizures, allergic reactions, and diabetes problems.

How to Find the Right Class:

  • Official: Make sure the class is from a trusted place like the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • Do It: Look for classes where you get to practice on dummies and in fake emergency situations.
  • Good Teachers: Check that the teachers are certified and know first aid well.
  • What's in It: See what the class will teach you. Make sure it's what you need to know.
  • Easy for You: Pick a class that fits your schedule and is close to you. Some places have online, in-person, or both.

2. Learn How the Body Works

You don't have to, but knowing a little about the body can really help your first aid skills. When you know how the body works, you understand injuries and illnesses better. You can give better care. Where to learn about the body:

  • Online Classes: Websites like Coursera and Khan Academy have classes about the body.
  • Books: Libraries and bookstores have books about anatomy.
  • Apps: There are apps that can show you how the body works.

3. Learn the Skills

Good first aid means knowing key skills. These are the basics of helping in an emergency response. Here are some important ones:

a. CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

CPR is how you help someone when their heart stops. You push on their chest and give them breaths. This keeps blood and air going to their brain and organs. Here are the steps:

  1. See If They're Okay: Tap their shoulder and shout, "Are you okay?"
  2. Call for Help: If they don't answer, call 911 (or your local emergency response number) right away. If someone else is there, ask them to call while you start CPR.
  3. Push on the Chest: Put the bottom of one hand in the middle of their chest, between their nipples. Put your other hand on top and lock your fingers. Push hard and fast. Push down at least 2 inches deep. Do this 100-120 times per minute.
  4. Give Breaths: After 30 pushes, give two breaths. Tilt their head back and lift their chin. Pinch their nose closed. Put your mouth over theirs and give two breaths. Each breath should last about one second.
  5. Keep Going: Keep doing 30 pushes and 2 breaths until help comes or they start to move.

b. Fixing Cuts and Stopping Bleeding

Stopping bleeding is a key first aid skill. Here's how to do it:

  1. Push on It: Use a clean cloth or bandage. Push hard on the cut until the bleeding stops.
  2. Lift It Up: If you can, lift the cut above their heart. This helps slow the bleeding.
  3. Use a Tourniquet (If You Have To): If the bleeding is really bad and you can't stop it by pushing on it, you might need a tourniquet. Put it 2-3 inches above the cut. Tighten it until the bleeding stops. Write down what time you put it on.

c. Treating Burns

Burns can be small or really bad. How bad it is depends on how deep it is and how much skin is burned. Here's how to treat burns:

  1. Cool It: Right away, put cool (not cold) water on the burn for 10-20 minutes.
  2. Cover It: Cover the burn with a clean, non-sticky bandage.
  3. Get Help: Get medical help for bad burns. Also, get help for burns on the face, hands, feet, or private parts. And for burns that cover a lot of the body.

d. Helping Someone Choking

Choking happens when something blocks the airway. You can use the Heimlich maneuver to get it out. Here's how to do it on an adult:

  1. Ask if They're Choking: If they can cough or talk, tell them to keep coughing.
  2. Do the Heimlich: Stand behind them and wrap your arms around their waist. Make a fist and put the thumb side against their stomach, a little above their belly button. Grab your fist with your other hand. Give quick, upward pushes into their stomach. Keep doing this until the object comes out.

4. Practice a Lot

You need to practice first aid and CPR regularly. That's how you stay good at it. Here are some ways to practice:

  • Take Classes Again: Take refresher courses every two years. This keeps you up-to-date.
  • Use Dummies: Practice pushing on the chest and giving breaths on CPR dummies.
  • Pretend: Practice helping in fake emergency situations with friends or family.

5. Get a First Aid Kit

It's important to have a first aid kit for emergencies. A good kit should have:

  • Bandages of different sizes
  • Clean gauze pads
  • Tape
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Antibiotic cream
