Let's Make Aerobic Compost Tea!

You need a few things to get started. Good compost. Air. And food for the microbes. Let's break it down, step by step:

1. First, Get Your Gear Together:

• Good Compost: This is key. It should be dark and crumbly. And smell earthy. If it smells bad, don't use it.
• Water without Chlorine: Chlorine kills the good stuff. Use well water, rainwater. Or tap water that’s been sitting out for a day or two.
• Air Pump: Like the kind for a fish tank. You need bubbles!
• Microbe Food (Optional): This helps them grow faster. Think:
  • Molasses
  • Kelp meal
  • Fish stuff
  • Humic acid
• A Bucket: A 5-gallon bucket is perfect.
• A Strainer: An old t-shirt or cheesecloth works great.

2. Let's Brew!

1. Fill the Bucket: With your non-chlorine water. Leave a little space at the top.
2. Add Compost: Put a cup or two of compost in your strainer bag. Tie it up tight.
3. Sink the Bag: Put the bag in the water. Make sure it’s all wet.
4. Add Air: Put the air stone in the bucket and turn on the pump. Bubbles are your friend!
5. Add Food (Maybe): If you're using food, add a little now. A tablespoon of molasses per gallon of water is a good start.

3. Wait… and Brew!

Let it brew for a day or two. The sweet spot is between 60-70°F (15-21°C). If it gets too hot, you can hurt the microbes. The water should get frothy. And smell a little earthy. If it smells bad, toss it out!

4. Strain and Use!

Take out the compost bag. Strain the tea to get rid of any chunks. You can use the leftover compost as mulch for your plants. Now you have awesome compost tea!

How to Give Your Plants a Compost Tea Treat

You can use compost tea in a few ways:

• Spray the Leaves: Mix the tea with water (1 part tea, 10 parts water). Spray it on the leaves. Do this in the morning or evening.
• Water the Soil: Pour the tea right on the soil around your plants.
