Want to make your computer run faster and be more secure? Upgrading to the newest version of Windows can do just that. Installing Windows 10 isn't as hard as you might think. This guide will show you how, step-by-step.
Before you start putting Windows on your computer, there are some things you need to do first. Getting ready will help make sure everything goes smoothly.
This is really important. Installing Windows 10 will erase everything on your computer's main drive. You don't want to lose your photos, documents, or anything else important. Copy all your files to a safe place. Like an external hard drive or cloud storage. You can use Windows' built-in tool called File History, or another program.
Make sure your computer is powerful enough to run Windows 10. Here's what you need:
You need a key to activate Windows 10. You can buy one from Microsoft. Or from other places that sell software. If you're upgrading from Windows 7 or 8.1, you might be able to upgrade for free. But that offer ended a while ago.
You need a USB drive or DVD to install Windows 10. The easiest way? Use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool. Here’s how:
If you bought a Windows 10 key, find it now! You'll need it later.
Okay, you're ready to go. Let's start installing Windows.
Plug the USB drive into your computer. Restart the computer. You might need to change a setting in your computer's BIOS. This tells the computer to start from the USB drive. To get to the BIOS, press a key when the computer starts up. It could be Del, F2, F12, or Esc. It depends on your computer. Look in your computer's manual for instructions.
In the BIOS, find the boot order settings. Move the USB drive to the top of the list. Save the changes and exit. Your computer will now boot from the Windows 10 USB drive.
Choose your language, time, and keyboard. Click "Next."
Click "Install now" to start the Windows 10 setup.
Type in your Windows 10 key. If you're upgrading, you might be able to skip this. Click "I don't have a product key." Windows might activate itself later.
Read the license terms. Check the box to agree. Click "Next."
You'll see two options:
For a clean install, choose "Custom."
You'll see a list of drives and partitions. Pick the one where you want to install Windows 10. Want to erase everything on that drive? Click "Format."
You can also delete and create partitions. Select a partition and click "Delete." Then, select the empty space and click "New." Choose the size and click "Apply."
After picking the partition, click "Next."
Windows 10 will now install itself. This can take a while. Your computer will restart a few times.
After the installation, you need to set things up.
Choose your region and keyboard layout. Click "Yes."
Connect to Wi-Fi or use an Ethernet cable. This lets Windows download updates and set things up.
Choose one:
Click "Next."
You can sign in with a Microsoft account. Or create a local account. A Microsoft account lets you sync your settings across devices.
To sign in, enter your email and password. To create a local account, click "Offline account."
Choose what data you want to share with Microsoft.
Windows 10 will now finish setting up. This might take a few minutes.
After Windows setup, do these things:
Windows 10 installs many drivers automatically. But you might need to install some yourself. Like for your graphics card or printer. Go to the manufacturer's website to download them.
Check for Windows updates. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click "Check for updates."
Protect your computer from viruses. Windows Defender is built-in. But you can also use another antivirus program.
Copy your files back from your backup.
Install your programs. Download them from the software maker's website.
Sometimes things go wrong. Here are some common problems and how to fix them:
Installing Windows 10 isn't too hard. Follow these steps. And you can make your computer run better and be more secure. Just remember to back up your data first!
