Screenshots on Windows

1. The Print Screen Key

The easiest way? The Print Screen key. It's usually labeled "PrtScn."

  1. Find the PrtScn key. Top right of your keyboard, usually.
  2. Press it! Your whole screen is now copied.
  3. Open Paint, Photoshop, or even Word.
  4. Press Ctrl + V to paste.
  5. Edit, save, and share! You got this.

Pro Tip: Some laptops need you to hold the Fn key while pressing PrtScn.

2. Alt + Print Screen

Want just the window you're using? Use Alt + PrtScn.

  1. Press Alt + PrtScn.
  2. Only the window you're in is copied. Awesome!
  3. Paste it (Ctrl + V) into an image program.
  4. Edit, save, share. Done!

3. Windows Key + Shift + S (Snip & Sketch)

Need more control? Windows Key + Shift + S is your friend. This opens Snip & Sketch.

  1. Press Windows Key + Shift + S. The screen dims.
  2. A toolbar pops up. Choose a snip type:
  • Rectangular Snip: Draw a box around what you want.
  • Freeform Snip: Draw any shape!
  • Window Snip: Click a window to grab it.
  • Full-screen Snip: Grabs everything, like the PrtScn key.
  • The screenshot is copied.
  • Click the notification in the corner. It opens Snip & Sketch where you can edit and save.
  • 4. Snipping Tool

    There's also a Snipping Tool app. It's similar to Snip & Sketch.

    1. Search for "Snipping Tool" in Windows. Open it.
    2. Click "New."
    3. Pick a snip type (like before).
    4. Grab your screenshot.
    5. Edit and save it in the Snipping Tool.

    Screenshots on a Mac

    Macs are just as easy to screenshot. Check it out:

    1. Command + Shift + 3

    Grabs the whole screen. Saves it as a file.

    1. Press Command + Shift + 3.
    2. Done! It's on your desktop.

    2. Command + Shift + 4

    Lets you pick an area to screenshot.

    1. Press Command + Shift + 4. The cursor changes.
    2. Click and drag a box.
    3. Let go. You got your screenshot!

    3. Command + Shift + 4 + Space Bar

    1. Press Command + Shift + 4.
    2. Press the Space Bar. The cursor changes to a camera.
    3. Click the window you want.
    4. Boom! Screenshot on your desktop.

    4. Command + Shift + 5

    Opens the Screenshot app. More options!

    1. Press Command + Shift + 5. A toolbar appears.
    2. Choose an option:
    • Capture Entire Screen: Whole screen.
    • Capture Selected Window: One window.
    • Capture Selected Portion: Pick an area.
    • Record Entire Screen: Makes a video!
    • Record Selected Portion: Records a video of a specific area.
  • Click "Capture" or "Record."
  • The screenshot or video is saved to your desktop.
  • Android Screenshots

    Android can be a little different depending on the phone. But usually...

    1. Press the Power button and the Volume Down button at the same time.
    2. Hold them for a sec until you see a flash.
    3. It's saved to your gallery!

    Other Ways on Android:

    • Palm Swipe (Samsung): Some Samsungs let you swipe your hand across the screen. You need to turn it on in settings.
    • Google Assistant: Say "Hey Google, take a screenshot." Magic!

    iPhone & iPad Screenshots

    iPhones and iPads depend on if they have a Home button.

    iPhone/iPad with Home Button:

    1. Press the Power button and the Home button together.
    2. Let go quickly.
    3. Check your Photos app!

    iPhone/iPad without Home Button:

    1. Press the Power button and the Volume Up button together.
    2. Let go fast.
    3. It's in your Photos app.
