We all face tough talks. You know, those really uncomfortable chats? Maybe it's telling a coworker their work isn't up to par. Or figuring out a fight with someone you love. Even hammering out a deal with a client. Being good at these talks? Super important for your career and your personal life.
A difficult conversation is any talk where feelings are strong. The stakes? High. And you just don't know how it'll end. These talks can get heated fast. Here's what they often look like:
Walking into a tough talk unprepared? Bad idea. Let's get ready, so you can handle the situation well. Some things to think about:
What do you want to get out of this? What's a good result for you? It's smart to also think about what the other person wants. What do they need to feel good about this? It is important to understand needs and concerns of the other person.
Try to see things from their point of view. Even if you don't agree. Think about their life, what they've been through. It can make it easier to talk to them. Listen closely. Ask questions. It shows you care.
Don't start this when someone's stressed or super tired. Find a private place where you can talk without getting bothered. And think about who has more "power" in the situation. Choose a spot where things feel fair. I once had a really tough talk with my boss... we ended up walking around the park. It made it easier to be honest.
Think about what you want to say. Don't memorize it. Just get clear on your main points. And try saying them calmly and nicely. What if they push back? Have some answers ready. Ask a friend to help you practice!
Tough talks bring on big feelings. Take a few deep breaths before you start. Think about your goals. Stay calm. If you start feeling too worked up during the talk? Take a break. Seriously.
Okay, you're ready. Now for the talk itself. Here are some tips to help:
Say something positive first. Thank them for being willing to talk. Find something you agree on. It makes things feel less scary.
Talk about your feelings. Don't blame them. So, instead of "You always make me mad," try "I feel frustrated when..." It's less likely to make them angry.
Pay attention. Look at them. Nod. Show you're listening. Ask questions. Make sure you get what they're saying. You could say, "So, you're saying you feel...?"
Even if you think they're wrong, be respectful. Acknowledge their feelings. Don't interrupt. Show you value what they say. Try to understand how they feel.
Don't just say what you think. Use facts and examples. Have data if you can. When things get emotional, stick to what you can see and prove.
Your body talks, too! Don't cross your arms. Don't frown. Look them in the eye. Keep your voice calm. Make sure your body language matches your words.
Most tough talks have a problem to solve. Here's how to find a solution:
Often, what you're fighting about on the surface isn't the real problem. Dig deeper. Ask questions. What do they really need? What are they worried about? Once you know the real problem, you can fix it.
Get together and think of lots of ideas. Don't judge them yet. Just write them all down. Try to think of unusual solutions.
Now, look at your list. Which ideas will work? Which ones are fair to everyone? What are the good and bad things about each idea? Pick the ones that solve the real problem.
You might have to give up something to get something else. Find solutions that meet everyone's needs. It's not about winning. It's about finding a solution that works for everyone.
Once you agree on something, write it down. Who will do what? When will they do it? This makes sure everyone's on the same page.
The talk isn't the end. You need to keep things going well afterward. Here's how:
Thank them for talking with you. Say you appreciate their point of view. It makes the relationship stronger.
If you agreed to do things differently, check in. See if they're doing what they said they would. Offer help if they need it.
Keep giving them feedback on how they're doing. Be specific. Give examples. Encourage them to be honest with you, too.
After a while, look at your agreement again. Does it still work? Do you need to change it? Be willing to talk about it again if things aren't working.
Being good at difficult conversations is so valuable. If you get ready, talk well, and solve problems together, you can handle any tough talk. It's a chance to make your relationships better, understand each other, and fix problems. It can turn a bad situation into a chance to grow.
