Learn how to build a website with React! This comprehensive guide covers everything from setup to deployment, empowering you to create dynamic web applications.
React is super popular for building websites. It helps you make cool, interactive stuff. Lots of people use it because it's easy to use and has a big group of people who can help. This guide will show you how to make a website with React. We'll start from the beginning and go all the way to putting it online. Whether you're new to this or know a bit already, this will help you make awesome websites with React.
Let's see why React is so liked before we get started.
Make sure you have these things ready before starting:
npm install -g yarn
Let's get your computer ready to build a React website. We'll use something called "Create React App." It's like a starter kit for React projects. It makes it easy to get started without having to set up a lot of stuff.
my-website
: npx create-react-app my-website cd my-website
This will make a folder called my-website
with all the stuff you need. If you want to use Yarn, type this instead:
yarn create react-app my-website cd my-website
cd my-website
. Then, start the website by typing: npm start
Or, if you're using Yarn:
yarn start
http://localhost:3000
.Let's look at what's inside your new React project:
node_modules
: This folder has all the extra tools your project needs.public
: This folder has files that everyone can see, like index.html
(the main page) and images.src
: This is where you'll write most of your code. Here are some important files:index.js
: This file starts your website. It puts the main part of your website (App
) onto the screen.App.js
: This is the main part of your website. It's a good place to start building your website.App.css
: This file makes App
look good.package.json
: This file tells your project what tools it needs and how to run.Now, let's build some parts of your website. In React, these parts are called "components." They're like building blocks that you can use over and over. Let's make a few simple ones:
src
folder, make a new file called Header.js
.import React from 'react'; function Header() { return ( <header> <nav> <a href="/">Home</a> <a href="/about">About</a> <a href="/services">Services</a> <a href="/contact">Contact</a> </nav> </header> ); } export default Header;
src
folder, make a new file called Footer.js
.import React from 'react'; function Footer() { return ( <footer> <p>© {new Date().getFullYear()} My Website. All rights reserved.</p> </footer> ); } export default Footer;
src
folder, make a new file called Home.js
.import React from 'react'; function Home() { return ( <main> <section> <h2>Welcome to My Website!</h2> <p>This is the home page of my website. Learn more about what we offer and get in touch today!</p> </section> </main> ); } export default Home;
Now that we have our building blocks, let's put them into the App.js
file.
src/App.js
: Replace the code in there with this: import React from 'react'; import Header from './Header'; import Footer from './Footer'; import Home from './Home'; import './App.css'; function App() { return ( <div className="App"> <Header /> <Home /> <Footer /> </div> ); } export default App;
This code tells App.js
to use the Header
, Footer
, and Home
components. Now you should see your basic website in the browser!
Let's add some style to our website with CSS. You can use the App.css
file or make new CSS files for each component.
src/App.css
: Add these lines to the file: .App { text-align: center; } header { background-color: #333; color: white; padding: 1rem; } nav a { color: white; text-decoration: none; margin: 0 1rem; } footer { background-color: #333; color: white; padding: 1rem; position: fixed; bottom: 0; width: 100%; } main { padding: 2rem; }
This CSS code adds colors to the header and footer, styles the links, and adds space around the main content. Feel free to change it to make it look how you want.
To make a website with more than one page, you need to use something called "routing." React Router is a popular tool for this.
npm install react-router-dom
Or, if you're using Yarn:
yarn add react-router-dom
App.js
: Make App.js
look like this: import React from 'react'; import { BrowserRouter as Router, Route, Switch } from 'react-router-dom'; import Header from './Header'; import Footer from './Footer'; import Home from './Home'; import About from './About'; import Services from './Services'; import Contact from './Contact'; import './App.css'; function App() { return ( <Router> <div className="App"> <Header /> <Switch> <Route exact path="/" component={Home} /> <Route path="/about" component={About} /> <Route path="/services" component={Services} /> <Route path="/contact" component={Contact} /> </Switch> <Footer /> </div> </Router> ); } export default App;
About.js
, Services.js
, and Contact.js
: Create these files in the src
folder and add some simple content to them, like you did with Home.js
.This code tells React Router which page to show when you click on a link. Now, clicking on the links in the header will take you to different pages.
Lots of websites need to get information from the internet to show you things. You can use the fetch
command or a tool like Axios to do this.
fetch
: Let's get some info and show it on the Home
page. import React, { useState, useEffect } from 'react'; function Home() { const [data, setData] = useState(null); useEffect(() => { fetch('https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/todos/1') .then(response => response.json()) .then(data => setData(data)); }, []); return ( <main> <section> <h2>Welcome to My Website!</h2> <p>This is the home page of my website. Learn more about what we offer and get in touch today!</p> {data && <p>Data from API: {data.title}</p>} </section> </main> ); } export default Home;
This code gets some information from a website and shows it on the page. Remember to handle any problems that might happen when getting the information.
When your website is ready, you need to put it on a server so people can see it. Here are some ways to do that:
Putting your website online usually means building it and then uploading the files to the hosting platform. Check the platform's instructions for how to do this.
It's important to make sure people can find your website on search engines like Google.
