Have you ever heard of the origami crane? In Japanese, it's called tsuru (鶴). It's probably the most famous origami shape. But it's more than just a pretty decoration. It means a lot in Japan.
Why Learn How to Origami Crane?
Making an origami crane is cool for a few reasons. It's a fun craft project you can do at home. You can:
- Get better at using your hands.
- Think better about shapes.
- Really focus on what you're doing.
Plus, a finished crane makes a great gift!
What You'll Need
Don't worry, you don't need much to get started. Just these things:
- Origami Paper: Special paper for origami works best. It's thin and easy to fold. A 6x6 inch square is a good size to start with.
- A Flat Surface: You need a clean, flat place to fold.
- Patience: It takes time to get good at origami. Don't give up!
Let's Get Folding!
Okay, here are the steps. Take your time and follow along. You'll have your own origami crane before you know it!
Step 1: The Preliminary Base (Square Base)
This is the base for many origami shapes.
- Start with a square piece of paper, color-side up. If one side is colored, put that side up.
- Fold in half diagonally, crease, and unfold. Make a triangle, then open it back up.
- Repeat on the other diagonal. Make another triangle the other way. Open it up. Now you should have an X shape in the middle.
- Flip the paper over to the white side.
- Fold in half horizontally, crease, and unfold. Make a rectangle, then open it up.
- Fold in half vertically, crease, and unfold. Make another rectangle the other way. Open it up. Now you should have a + shape in the middle.
- Bring all four corners towards the center. Push the corners in using the lines you made.
- Flatten to form a smaller square. Keep pushing until it flattens. This is your preliminary base. Make sure the open points are on the bottom.
Step 2: Forming the Diamond Base
This helps make the crane's wings and head.
- Open one flap of the top layer. Take the top piece of paper on one side and open it.
- Flatten and crease along the center line. Make it flat like a diamond. Press down the middle.
- Repeat on the opposite side. Do the same thing on the other side.
- Repeat on the remaining two flaps. Do it on the front and back too. Now you have a diamond with four points sticking out.
Step 3: Inside Reverse Folds (Forming the Head and Tail)
This is how you make the head and tail.
- Choose one point to be the head and another for the tail. Pick two points that are across from each other.
- Inside reverse fold for the head. Open the head point a little and fold the tip inside the crane. This makes the neck and head.
- Inside reverse fold for the tail. Do the same thing on the other point to make the tail. Try to make them the same length.
Step 4: Shaping the Wings
Almost done! Now for the wings.
- Fold down the top flaps on each side. Fold the top paper down on each side to make the wings. How far you fold them down changes how the wings look.
- Adjust the wing shape. You can bend the wings up or down to make them look cool.
- Gently pull the wings apart. Open the wings carefully to make the crane stand up. Don't rip the paper!
Tips for Success
Here are a few things that might help:
- Use thin paper: It's easier to fold.
- Crease sharply: Make the folds really strong.
- Take your time: Don't rush!
- Don't be afraid to start over: If you mess up, just try again.
- Watch video tutorials: Videos can help you understand.
More Fun with Origami
Once you know how to make a crane, try other things!
- Use different colors and patterns of paper.
- Vary the size of the paper.
- Learn other origami models.
- Create a senbazuru. Make 1,000 cranes!
- Incorporate origami into other crafts. Put cranes on cards or gifts.
Why the Crane is Special
The origami crane is special in Japan. It's linked to the story of Sadako Sasaki. She got sick from the Hiroshima bombing. She tried to fold 1,000 cranes to get better. Her story is now a symbol of peace.
People often give origami cranes to say "get well soon" or "I'm thinking of you." Making 1,000 cranes is a way to show support.
Now Go Fold!
Making an origami crane is fun and makes you feel good. You can learn something new, be creative, and learn about Japanese culture. So grab some paper and get started! You'll be surprised at what you can do. Have fun with this classic paper folding project!
