Mushroom ID: The Most Important Thing

Don't eat a mushroom if you aren't 100% sure what it is! Seriously. Even experts get fooled sometimes. Double-check everything. Here's what to look for:

What to Look For:

  1. Cap shape and size. Is it round? Flat? Big? Small?
  2. Cap surface. Smooth? Scaly? Sticky? What color is it?
  3. Gills, pores, or teeth. Look under the cap. Does it have gills (like a store-bought mushroom)? Or tiny holes (pores)? Or little teeth? What color are they? How close together are they?
  4. Stem. Is it in the middle? On the side? Is there even a stem? What color and shape is it? Does it have a ring around it?
  5. Spore print. This is like a mushroom fingerprint. You put the cap on paper and let it drop its spores. The color tells you a lot.
  6. Smell and taste. What does it smell like? Never eat a mushroom unless you know it's safe. A tiny taste (then spit it out) can sometimes help.
  7. Where you found it. Was it on wood? In the grass? Near a certain tree?
  8. Time of year. Some mushrooms only grow at certain times.

Compare what you see with the pictures and descriptions in your book. Look at everything. If you're not sure, take pictures and ask an expert.

Staying Safe: Don't Eat Poisonous Mushrooms!

  • Watch out for look-alikes. Some good mushrooms look like bad ones. The Amanita family has some deadly mushrooms.
