Giving feedback isn't just about what you say. It's how you say it. Here are some rules to live by:
Don't attack someone's character. Instead, focus on what they did. For example, instead of saying "You're always late!", try: "I've seen you late to the last few meetings." See the difference? It's less personal.
Don't be vague. "Your work wasn't good" is useless. Give examples! Like, "The intro was confusing. Maybe add more details." The clearer you are, the easier it is to fix.
Don't just point out problems. Suggest solutions! Instead of, "That was a bad speech", try, "You could make it better by using shorter sentences." Show them you want them to succeed.
Think about when and where you give feedback. Don't do it in public. Find a quiet spot. And don't do it when they're already stressed out.
Begin with a compliment! "I loved your energy in the meeting, and..." It makes the feedback easier to hear.
Don't blame. Say how you feel. Instead of "You made me angry," say "I felt angry when..." It's less confrontational.
Try to understand their point of view. How might they feel? Being empathetic makes a big difference.
Don't dwell on the past. Talk about how to do things better next time. Like, "Next time, try..." Keep it positive.
Let them talk. Ask questions. Hear what they have to say. It's a conversation, not a lecture.
Check in later. See how they're doing. Offer more help. Show that you care.

Good, bad, good. Start with a compliment, give the feedback, end with another compliment. "Great job on..., but..., and I really liked..."
Situation, Behavior, Impact. Explain the situation, the behavior you saw, and how it affected things. "In the meeting, you interrupted me, and it made it hard to explain our ideas."
Action, Impact, Desired Outcome. Talk about the action, its impact, and what you want to see happen next. "The report was late, which delayed the project. I'd like to see reports on time so we can meet our deadlines."
