How to Replace Batteries in Car Key Fob

Learn how to replace your car key battery quickly & easily! DIY guide, tool list, & troubleshooting tips to keep your car key fob working.

It's super annoying when your car key fob dies. You can't get into your car! But guess what? Changing the battery yourself is usually pretty easy and cheap. I'll show you how to do it!

Why Bother Changing the Battery?

Your car key fob is important. It lets you unlock your car, start it (sometimes), and set off the alarm. But it runs on a battery. And batteries die. When they do, you might see these things:

  • You have to get super close to the car for the fob to work.
  • Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Annoying, right?
  • It just stops working. You're locked out!

The good news? Changing the battery fixes these problems. You save money too, instead of going to a professional. I'll show you how to do this DIY car repair.

What Stuff Do You Need?

Before you start, get these things ready:

  • A New Battery: This is the most important part! Check your car's manual or the old battery to see what kind you need. CR2032 is a common one.
  • Small Screwdriver: You'll probably need this to open the fob.
  • Prying Tool (Maybe): A plastic thing or even a guitar pick can help open the fob without breaking it.
  • Soft Cloth: To keep from scratching the fob.
  • Clean Surface: So you don't lose any tiny parts.

Step-by-Step: Changing the Battery

  1. Know Your Fob: Some have screws, some just snap together. Knowing this helps!
  2. Find the Opening: Look for a line or a small dent on the side. That's where you open it.
  3. Open It Up:
    • Screws: Unscrew it! Then gently pry it open.
    • Snap-Together: Stick your screwdriver in the dent and twist gently. Don't break it!
  4. See the Battery? Great! It might be held in place by a clip.
  5. Take Out the Old One: Look at which way it's facing (+ and -). This is important! Take a picture if you want.
  6. Put In the New One: Make sure the + and - are facing the right way. It should click in.
  7. Put It Back Together: Line up the two halves and snap them together. If there was a screw, put it back.
  8. Test It: Does it work? Awesome! You did it. If not, check the battery direction and make sure it's closed tight.

Different Cars Are a Little Different

Okay, so the basic idea is the same. But some cars are a little different. Here's the scoop for a few popular brands:

Toyota/Lexus

They often have a small key you can slide out. Then use a screwdriver to open the fob. CR2032 batteries are common.

Honda/Acura

Look for a screw under the emergency key. Take out the key to get to the screw. CR2032 is a common battery.

Ford/Lincoln

Usually snap-together. Find a small dent and pry it open. CR2032 or CR2025 batteries are common.

BMW

These can be tricky! Some need a special tool. The battery might be rechargeable. Check your car's manual!

Mercedes-Benz

They have a button that releases the metal key. Once the key is out, use a screwdriver to open it. CR2025 is common.

Uh Oh, Problems?

Sometimes things don't go as planned. Here are some tips if you're having trouble with your car key repair:

  • Can't Open It: Are you using the right tool? Are you pushing in the right spot? Try a little heat from a hairdryer.
  • New Battery Doesn't Work: Is it facing the right way? Is the battery old? Check the date!
  • Still Doesn't Work: Maybe it needs to be reprogrammed. A locksmith can help. Or, maybe something else is broken inside.
  • Broke the Case: You can buy a new case online!

Keep Your Battery Alive Longer

Want your car key fob battery to last? Try these tips:

  • Don't Get It Too Hot or Cold: Don't leave it in the sun or freezing cold.
  • Keep It Dry: Water is bad.
  • Store It Safely: Put it in a safe, dry place when you're not using it.
  • Check It Now and Then: See if it's working as well as it should. If not, change the battery!

When to Call a Pro

Changing a car key battery is usually easy. But sometimes, you need help:

  • Fancy Fob: Some luxury cars have complicated fobs. You might break it trying to open it.
  • Reprogramming: If it needs to be reprogrammed, a locksmith or the car dealer can do it.
  • Broken Fob: If the fob is broken, a pro can see if it can be fixed.

Save Money Doing It Yourself!

A locksmith or car dealer will charge you a lot to change the battery. Most of that is labor cost. If you do it yourself, you just pay for the battery. That's a big saving! It's a good DIY car repair if you're on a budget.

The End!

Changing the battery in your car key fob is easy and cheap. Just follow these steps and be careful. You'll save money and feel good about doing it yourself! If you're not comfortable doing it, that's okay too. Call a professional. But give it a try first!
