The French press. Ever heard of it? It's also called a cafetière, coffee press, or even a plunger pot. No matter what you call it, it's a super simple way to make really good coffee. Coffee lovers dig it because it's easy to use and gets all the flavor out of the coffee beans. I'm going to show you how to make coffee press coffee perfectly, from start to finish. Get ready for a tasty coffee experience!
Why pick a French press over other coffee makers? Good question. Most coffee makers use paper filters, but a French press uses a mesh filter. This lets the coffee's natural oils and tiny bits of coffee (sediment) through. This makes for a richer, fuller-bodied cup. Plus, no paper filter means it's better for the planet!
Before we start brewing, let's get everything together. This is what you'll need for your coffee brewing adventure:
Ready to brew some awesome French press coffee? Here we go!
Grind your coffee beans. You want a coarse grind, like coarse sea salt. Why? Because a coarse grind keeps the grounds from going through the mesh filter into your coffee. For the best taste, grind right before you brew.
Heat your water to between 200°F and 205°F (93°C and 96°C). Why this temp? It gets the best flavor out of the coffee without burning it. Don't have a thermometer? Boil the water and let it sit for a minute to cool down a bit.
Pour a little hot water into the French press. Swirl it around to warm up the press. This helps keep the water hot while brewing. Then, dump the water out.
Put the ground coffee into the warm French press. A good rule of thumb is a 1:15 to 1:17 coffee-to-water ratio. So, for a 34-ounce press, use about 60-65 grams of coffee.
Pour a little hot water (about twice the amount of coffee) over the grounds. This is called the "bloom." It lets the coffee release carbon dioxide. You'll see bubbles! Let it bloom for about 30 seconds.
Slowly pour the rest of the hot water over the coffee grounds. Make sure all the grounds are wet. Stir it gently.
Put the lid on the French press. But don't push the plunger down yet! Let the coffee sit and brew (steep) for 4 minutes. This is the sweet spot for most coffees. Try different times to see what you like best.
After 4 minutes, slowly press the plunger down. Don't push too hard! That can make the coffee taste bitter. Press until the plunger reaches the bottom.
Pour the coffee into your cup right away. Don't let it sit in the French press. It will keep brewing and get bitter. Enjoy your fresh coffee!
