Having a flat tire is just part of owning a car. It can be a pain, but knowing how to deal with it is super important for your safety and everyone else's. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know. From getting ready to calling for help, you'll be set to handle this common problem.
Before you even get a flat, taking care of your car can help stop it from happening in the first place. It also makes sure you're ready if it does. Here are some things you can do:
Checking your tires often is a must. Look for these things:
Tire rotation means moving your tires around on the car. This helps them wear evenly, last longer, and handle better. Check your owner's manual to see how often to do this.
If your wheels aren't lined up right, your tires can wear unevenly. It can also make your car pull to one side or your steering wheel shake. If you notice these things, get your alignment checked.
Before you go anywhere, make sure you have these things in your car:
Okay, so you got a flat. Here’s what to do:
This is the most important thing. Don't stop on the side of a busy road. Find a flat spot away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights.
Get your spare tire, jack, lug wrench, and everything else listed above. Set out the reflective triangles behind your car to warn others.
Put on the parking brake hard. Then, put wheel chocks behind the wheels opposite the flat tire. This keeps the car from moving.
Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Turn them the wrong way (counterclockwise). Don't take them all the way off yet. Just loosen them. This can take some muscle. If they're stuck, try standing on the wrench!
Check your owner's manual to find the right spot to put the jack on your car's frame. This is a strong spot that can hold the car's weight. Get the jack in place.
Slowly lift the car with the jack until the flat tire is a few inches off the ground. Make sure the car is steady and the jack isn't slipping.
Now, take the lug nuts all the way off. Put them somewhere safe, like in your pocket, so you don't lose them.
Grab the flat tire and pull it straight off. It might be heavier than you think!
Line up the spare tire with the bolts and push it on. Make sure it's flat against the hub.
Put the lug nuts back on by hand. Tighten them in a star pattern (opposite nuts) so the pressure is even. Don't tighten them all the way yet, just snug.
Slowly lower the car with the jack until the spare tire is touching the ground, but the car's full weight isn't on it yet.
Use the lug wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts in that star pattern. Get them nice and tight. Don't overdo it, or you could break something.
Lower the car all the way to the ground and take away the jack.
Give the lug nuts one last tighten to be super sure.
Put the flat tire, jack, and everything else back where it belongs.
Use a tire gauge to check the air pressure in the spare. Add air if you need to. Remember, spare tires often need more air than regular tires.
You changed the tire! Now what?
Spare tires are just for short trips. They aren't made to go fast or last long. Get your flat tire fixed or get a new tire ASAP. Driving on a damaged tire is dangerous.
After driving a little bit (like 50-100 miles), check the lug nuts again. Make sure they haven't loosened up. Use a torque wrench if you have one.
It's good to know how to change a tire, but sometimes it's better to call for help:
Many insurance companies offer roadside assistance. Keep their number handy.
You can't stop every flat tire, but you can lower your chances:
Knowing how to change a flat tire is a must-know skill for drivers. If you follow this guide and take care of your car, you can lower your risk of getting a flat and be ready if it happens. Always put your safety first and call for help if you aren't sure. A little planning goes a long way!
