Let's Make Paper Plate Stars!
Paper plate crafts are awesome! They're cheap, easy to find, and you can do so much with them. Making a paper plate star is a great starting point for kids and adults. This guide shows you how, with extra ideas to make them super cool.
What You'll Need:
- Paper plates (cardboard or foam are best)
- Scissors
- Glue stick or hot glue gun (grown-ups only for the hot glue!)
- Markers, crayons, or paint (optional)
- Glitter, sequins, or other fun stuff (optional)
- Hole punch (optional, for hanging)
- Ribbon or string (optional, for hanging)
Easy Paper Plate Star: Method 1
- Fold it up: Fold your plate in half, then in half again. Make nice sharp creases – it makes a difference!
- Cut the points: Carefully cut along the curved edge, stopping about an inch from the middle. Cut through all the layers.
- Open it up!: Unfold it carefully. Voila! A star! Tweak the points to make it even.
- Decorate!: Get creative with markers, crayons, paint, or glitter. Have fun with it!
- Hang it up (optional): Punch a hole near the top and add some string to hang it up.
A Fancier Star: Method 2 (Layered!)
This makes a really neat, 3D star. You'll need two plates for this one.
- Make two stars: Follow steps 1-3 from Method 1 to make two basic stars.
- Decorate them differently: Make each star a different color or pattern. This adds some zing!
- Glue them together: Carefully glue the two stars together, slightly offsetting the points. A glue stick is less messy.
- Add extra sparkle: Once it's dry, add glitter, sequins, or stickers.
More Fun Ideas!
You can do so much with these paper plate stars! Here are some ideas:
- Different shapes: Instead of points, try wavy edges or notches! You can even add other shapes inside the star.
- Collage stars: Cut out smaller shapes from other colored paper and glue them on.
- Themed stars: Make holiday stars for Christmas, Halloween, or whatever you're celebrating!
- Textured stars: Glue felt, fabric, or even crumpled paper onto your star for a cool texture.
- 3D star ornaments: Cut several star shapes of different sizes and layer them. Add beads or pompoms!
- Star garland: Make a bunch of stars and string them together for a festive garland.
- Mix it up!: Use pipe cleaners, yarn, or buttons with your paper plates for really unique stars.
Tips for Success:
- Sharp scissors are your friend: Sharp scissors make cleaner cuts.
- Adult supervision: Always supervise kids when using scissors and glue, especially hot glue.
